The locations layer plots a list of places on the current image. You can select the font and color used to display the place name. The list used is a text file with a line for each location containing the name, latitude and longitude separated by commas. For example the line for San Francisco would be:
San Francisco,37.7540,-122.4359
A sample file is included with Catfood Desktate (places.csv), which includes cities with more than four million inhabitants (and San Francisco, home of Catfood Software).
The borders layer plots political borders between countries. Catfood Desktate includes a default border image (Earth Borders.jpg), or you can select your own. The image should be black and white - black is interpreted as transparent when the layer is merged and white pixels will be replaced with the current color selection.
The time zone layer adds an image displaying time zones and the international date line and displays the current time in each zone at the top of the screen (updated with the same frequency as the Desktate image). You can configure the font used and the color for both the text and image. Catfood Desktate includes a default time zone image (Time Zones.jpg), or you can select your own. The image should be black and white - black is interpreted as transparent when the layer is merged and white pixels will be replaces with the current color selection.
The clouds layer merges a composite mosaic of global cloud cover with the current Desktate image. Desktate will attempt to update the mosaic once every three hours. You can choose a custom color for the clouds, Desktate will automatically shade the custom color for cloud intensity and nighttime.
